Kristen Stewart says she’s ‘protective’ over Princess Diana as she prepares to play her in Spencer

Kristen Stewart says it was ‘hard not to feel protective’ about Princess Diana while playing the late royal in her forthcoming film Spencer.

Though the 30-year-old actress was young when the Princess of Wales died, she told Jimmy Kimmel it still had an impact on her portrayal of Diana.

Asked what it was like to step into the shoes of ‘one of the most beloved figures in the history of the world,’ Kristen explained how while she ‘didn’t grow up’ with her, she feels a connection to the princess, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

The role of a lifetime: Kristen Stewart spoke about her connection to Princess Diana, who she’ll play in the upcoming film Spencer, while stopping by Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday night

The Twilight star opened up while on Kimmel to talk about her new holiday movie The Happiest Season, telling Jimmy, who is 23-years her senior, that while she ‘didn’t grow up with her… in the same way,’ it still had an impact.

‘I was really young when she passed away,’ Stewart, who was seven at the time, went on, adding that she did remember the fields of flowers which were put in front of Buckingham Palace in honor of the ‘people’s princess.’

‘It happened really quickly,’ Stewart went on.

‘I was really young, [I] didn’t know what was going on,’ she said, but continued to say how ‘hard’ it is ‘not to feel protective of her.’

‘She was so young,’ K-Stew went on.

Offering some insight into how she’ll be approaching the role – which plans to start shooting in early 2021 – she said: ‘I mean, everyone’s perspective is different and there’s no way to get anything right because what is fact in relation to personal experience.’

The film will only explore a sliver of the philanthropist’s life, focusing on three days where Diana realizes it is time to part ways with Prince Charles during a Christmas at Queen Elizabeth’s Sandringham estate in the 1990s,

‘My movie takes place over three days, and it’s this really poetic internal imagining of what that might have felt like rather than giving new information,’ Stewart explained.

Taking the crown: There’s been a renewed interest in Diana’s life and death since the debut of the fourth season of The Crown, where Emma Corrin, 24, plays the Princess

‘We kind of don’t have a mark to hit, we just also love her,’ she went on.

Stewart has plenty to live up, especially considering the renewed interest in the royal’s life and death, largely spurred on by the fourth season of the Netflix hit The Crown.

In the series newcomer Emma Corrin, 24, plays the part of Princess Di.
