Perfumer reveals how to layer your scents COULD create your own signature smell

A perfumer has revealed his insider tip for creating your own signature smell – by layering your favourite scents.

Perfume Direct has provided the ultimate solution to put a stop to you falling out of love with your everyday fragrances and helps people avoid potentially ‘over-powering’ others.

With a recent survey finding, on average, people in the UK have five bottles of perfume open at any one time, ‘fragrance layering’ could be the perfect way to update your signature scent this autumn.

Jonny Webber from Perfume Direct explained: ‘Fragrance layering is ideal if you just can’t find the ‘one’, a perfume that you absolutely love. Instead, you have the chance to make your own signature scent using perfumes you already like.

Perfumer Jonny Webber has shared his insider trader secret of ‘fragrance layering’ to help people who feel disheartened by their ever-growing collection of perfumes they can no longer smell. Picture: Stock

‘By layering your perfume, you can also help to make the overall scent last longer, as your skin won’t absorb all the fragrance oils as quickly.’

He suggested, while there aren’t any set ‘rules’ to it, there are some general guidelines people should adhere to, such as spraying the heavier scent first so as not to overpower the lighter fragrance.

‘Understanding the various notes and layers within each individual fragrance can also.

‘The top notes of a fragrance are what you usually smell straight away when you spray it; they are usually fresh and light,’ he added.

Tips for layering perfumes

1. Understand the layers to a fragrance

2. Avoid combining two heavy fragrances

3. Mix jasmine notes

4. Combine opposing fragrances

5. Wear commonly combined notes

‘Middle notes form the heart of the fragrance and often consist of warmer and soft scents. The bottom notes develop last and linger for hours.’

‘Everyone’s perception of scent is different, so try experimenting until you find a combination that you love.

‘It’s wise to avoid combining two heavy fragrances as this could result in an overwhelming blend.

‘For example, Black Orchid by Tom Ford is absolutely best worn on its own as it’s already very intense and complex.’

COMBINE JASMINE FRAGRANCES

Jonny revealed: ‘If you’ve never layered your fragrances before, consider combining two perfumes that share a common note.

‘A good example of this would be jasmine, which is very popular and used in a multitude of different fragrances.’

What perfumes to pair: Teaming Daisy Eau So Fresh, which has jasmine middle notes as well as fresh and fruity top notes – grapefruit, raspberry and pear – with Michael Kors Glam Jasmine  will give a great combination of two Jasmine-based fragrances.

Coupling jasmine notes can make a wonderful new scent which is totally unique (pictured left, Jonny recommended combining Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh, 75ml (£32.99) and right, Michael Kors Glam Jasmine, 100ml (£53.99))

‘The mixture will give a beautiful result of a sensual, rich and sweet scent that’s a bit more unique.’

‘Or, if you’re feeling slightly braver, I suggest trying to team Gucci Bloom – a floral fragrance with notes of jasmine – and Mugler Alien – a wood-based fragrance with jasmine.

‘Other popular woody floral fragrances include Channel No5 and Baccarart Rouge, as well as Marc Jacobs Daisy and Jimmy Choo Blossom.’

For those feeling a little more brave, Jonny advises starting off with a floral scent and matching it with a perfume with woody notes (pictured, left, Gucci Bloom, 30ml (£42.99) and Mugler Alien, 30ml (£43.99))

MIX CITRUS WITH DRY WOOD SCENTS

Jonny revealed: ‘Bringing together citrus and dry wood scents makes for a spectacular and combination.

‘As they both sit next to each other on the fragrance wheel, you can spray away with confidence that these two smells will blend well together.’

He added: ‘In many cases, woody and musk-based fragrances are the easiest to layer with, as they can combine effortlessly with fruity notes, floral notes or even something spicy.

What perfumes to pair: While CK One is the fragrance that most people associate with a strong citrus smell, Versace Yellow Diamond Intense has top notes of Amalfi Lemon and middle notes of African orange flower.

‘And with woody middle and base notes Estee Lauder’ Sensuous is an opulent woody fragrance for women that, when combined with citrus, creates an intriguing scent with lots of personality.

Another combination recommended by Jonny was citrus with dry wood notes (pictured left,  Versace Yellow Diamond Intense (30ml – £37.99) and right, Estee Lauder Sensuous (50ml – £34.99))

TRY WEARING FLORAL WITH ORIENTAL SCENTS

Jonny revealed: ‘Oriental notes are typically herbs and spices or dry, powdery, resin notes and described as exotic and seductive.’

What perfumes to pair: ‘To create a popular floral oriental scent, such as much loved Coco Mademoiselle and Tom Ford’s Private Blend Soleil Blanc, people new to fragrance layering are advised to go for an overtly floral fragrance.

‘Taking Jimmy Choo Floral and combining it with a more intense oriental perfume such as Secret Obsession is said to create an incredibly unique scent.’

He also revealed a floral scent such as Jimmy Choo’s Floral (left) could be combined nicely with a heavier oriental fragrance (pictured right, Secret Obsession)

DON’T BE SCARED TO WEAR OPPOSING SCENTS

Jonny revealed: ‘If you’re feeling a little braver, choose two opposite fragrances; for example, a spicy note mixed with vanilla.

‘Or if you combine two notes from the opposite sides of the fragrance wheel, you can get something really exciting.’

What perfumes to pair: ‘For a popular vanilla perfume try Lancome’s Idole then layer with the spicy notes of Diesel Loverdose which is a playful composition of spicy with a hint of floral.

‘Another perfect combination is to blend fresh citrus scents with soft oriental ones which sit on opposing sides of the fragrance wheel.

‘To create such a smell, people can try applying a base layer of Versace Yellow Diamond Intense with Calvin Klein’s Secret Obsession.’

Jonny also advised selecting opposing fragrances to create a new scent, including vanilla scents, like Lancome Idole, 25ml (£43.99) with spicy notes such as those in Loverdose, 75ml (£45.99)

Jonny also revealed a unique scent could be crafted by combining citrus scents with soft oriental ones (pictured left, Versace Yellow Diamond Intense, and right, Calvin Klein’s Secret Obsession.’)

WEAR COMMONLY COMBINED NOTES

Jonny revealed: ‘Some fragrances already combine notes, which you can also create from your collection’.

What perfumes to pair: ‘With a price tag of £235.99 for a 100ml bottle, Tom Ford’s unisex fragrances, such as its Tobacco Vanille Eau De Parfum, might be stretching the perfume budget somewhat.

‘For a similar combination of spicy notes with vanilla you could try layering a spicy noted fragrance such as Calvin Klien’s Obessession with Miss Dior which has vanilla base notes.

‘Chloe Nomade is a scent famed for its perfectly balanced fruity floral and a woody notes.

‘Floral scents provide a great anchor for mixing so start with a classic floral boutique like Viktor + Rolf’s Flowerbomb and combine it with a sophisticated scent like Cartier La Panthère, with woody base notes including oakmoss, leather, patchouli and musk, for a more refined fragrance.’
